The photograph titled “Phoenix Rising” was created by artist Paul Outerbridge in 1937. In the photograph we see a blend of sculpture and human form. The upper portion presents a classical-style bust of what appears to be a youthful figure with curly hair, resembling Greek or Roman statuary, whereas the lower half reveals a living person’s female breasts. The living arms are raised and placed behind the bust in such a manner that they seem to become a extension of the sculpture, creating a visual illusion of the statue having a complete body.
