Untitled by Jerry Uelsmann (1976)

The photograph titled “Untitled” was created by artist Jerry Uelsmann in the year 1976. Uelsmann is known for his work in photomontage, and his images often feature surrealistic elements combined through darkroom techniques.

In this black and white photograph, we see an interior scene with strong surrealist overtones. The picture showcases a room that appears to be a classic Victorian or Edwardian study with wooden wall paneling. In the center of the room, there is a table with a large, open book on it. Above the table, there’s a brilliant source of light akin to the sun shining through an overcast sky filled with dramatic clouds. This celestial element stands in stark contrast with the interior setting, as it appears to occupy the same space where the room’s ceiling would logically be. To the right of the image, there’s a fireplace with a mantel clock atop it, indicating a domestic environment. The room also features a carpet, and on the wall to the left of the fireplace, a framed picture or mirror is barely visible. The juxtaposition of the indoor setting with the outdoor skyscape creates a dreamlike and thought-provoking composition which is characteristic of Uelsmann’s style.
