W. Eugene Smith was an outstanding American photojournalist born in Wichita, Kansas in 1918. He began his photography journey when he was 14 years and proceeded to photograph for local newspapers at the age of 17. Later on, he won a photographic scholarship to Notre Dame University and started working with Newsweek magazine then joined Life magazine.

Smith made significant milestones as a correspondent photographer during World War II where he covered numerous invasions and air combat missions. He is widely known as ‘perhaps the single most important American photographer in the development of the editorial photo essay.’ His work is characterized by a strong sense of empathy and social conscience which earned him remarkable recognition.
