About Emmet Gowin

Emmet Gowin, an American photographer born in Virginia in 1941, gained fame for his intimate portraits of his wife and her family in the 1970s. He studied photography at the Richmond Professional Institute and obtained his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1967. Gowin began capturing European landscapes in the early 1970s, which caught several art galleries’ attention.

In addition to working as a freelance photographer since 1967, Gowin has also spent time teaching photography at Princeton University after receiving an invitation to do so in 1973. He taught there for over two decades before retiring. His current work involves aerial views of sites of buried nuclear waste found throughout America’s West.

Gowin has had many solo exhibitions at notable art museums like The Museum of Modern Art and Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. His black and white photographs are well-known throughout the country and overseas due to their subjectivity and use of various photographic techniques he has developed over an extensive career spanning several years.
